IOWA COMMUNITY ACTION ASSOCIATION TO ADMINISTER DISASTER CASE MANAGEMENT SERVICES FOR 2010 DISASTERS

Iowans Encouraged to Contact Organization in Their County for Assistance

(DES MOINES) – The Iowa Community Action Association (ICAA) has been selected to administer case management services for individuals impacted by the 2010 disasters.

“We have a history of providing services to children and families, and assisted with providing case management services after the 2008 disasters,” said Lana Ross, Executive Director of the ICAA. “We already collaborate with partners at the local and state level, so this only seemed like a natural fit for us.”

The ICAA was selected because of its 45 year history of delivering emergency services in Iowa, including case management programs. Also, many of the ICAA’s staff members already have experience advocating for impacted families after major disasters.

“ICAA’s vision is that every family needing case management services be able to navigate through the process and receive the support necessary to access needed resources to reduce the impact of and recover from the natural disasters,” said Ross. Case management advocates will work directly with individuals and families to determine their unmet needs and assist with efforts to recover.

Advocates will remain in contact with clients as much as necessary to assess how each person is doing in their recovery plan.

Advocates will also network with other agencies to see what services and resources are available to help Iowans best recover. Besides providing case managers, many local Community Action Agencies are helping impacted Iowans apply for the state’s Unmet Needs Disaster Grant program.

The program provides up to $2,500 per household to help pay for losses or expenses from this year’s disasters which have not yet been covered by other forms of assistance. Expenses for personal property, home repair, food assistance, child care and temporary housing may be eligible for reimbursement.

The grants are designed to help cover unmet needs in counties declared presidential disaster areas for Individual Assistance between June 1 and August 31, 2010.

Individuals in need of case management services can find the organization administering the program in their area by calling the Rebuild Iowa Office at (866) 849-0323 or by visiting www.rio.iowa.gov/2010/index.html, and clicking on the county in which they reside.

The 38 disaster-impacted counties eligible for case management services and the state’s Unmet Needs Disaster Grant program are: Appanoose, Black Hawk, Boone, Calhoun, Cherokee, Clayton, Decatur, Delaware, Dubuque, Fayette, Franklin, Hamilton, Howard, Humboldt, Ida, Jackson, Jasper, Jones, Kossuth, Lee, Lucas, Lyon, Mahaska, Marion, Monroe, O’Brien, Osceola, Polk, Ringgold, Shelby, Sioux, Story, Taylor, Union, Wapello, Warren, Webster and Wright Counties.
