NICAO - North Iowa Community Action Organization

Advancing System Improvements to Support Healthy People 2010 Grant (ASIST2010)

North Iowa Community Action (NICAO) is only one of twelve organizations nationwide that have been awarded a three-year ASIST2010 Grant by the Department of Health and Human Services, Office on Women’s Health for the total amount of $705,821. NICAO is acting as the fiscal agent and administrative entity for the grant on behalf of the 14-County North Central Iowa Regional Planning Coalition. The grant award is for $231,847 for the first year, $234,592 the second year, and $239,382 for the third year in order to develop a program of screening, education, and support for women in six counties in north central Iowa (including Butler, Cerro Gordo, Hancock, Palo Alto, Winnebago and Worth). A seventh county (Franklin) will offer the program in Spanish for the Hispanic population in the area. The purpose of the program is to identify women at risk of diabetes or who have already been diagnosed with diabetes and to assist them in changing their diet and exercise habits to address the conditions of diabetes and overweight. Women will be matched with a peer educator for support and provided training, education and support group activities by Diabetes Educators, a Clinical Psychologist, and a Hispanic Family Therapist. Additional health professionals throughout the 14-county coalition service area will also receive training in the techniques used in this project in order to provide further support to the women enrolled in the project. The co-directors of the project will be employed by North Iowa Community Action.
