Earned Income Tax Credit
MICA's Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) project offers free tax preparation to low-income families and individuals in Hardin, Marshall, Poweshiek, and Tama County through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites. The program collaborates with local community partners to help low-income families identify tax credits for which they may not be aware they are eligible. Powered entirely by volunteers, this program has been proven to be one of the most effective programs in the United States at lifting low-income families out of poverty.
During the 2009 tax season, EITC volunteers filed almost 200 tax returns over the four counties, bringing over $375,000 back to local communities in the form of tax refunds. The project typically begins in late January and runs through mid-April with several opportunities for free tax assistance in each county.
