Lifetime Dads
Lifetime Dads is a fatherhood initiative designed to meet the needs of fathers in UDMO's 12-county service area (Buena Vista, Clay, Dickinson, Emmet, Hamilton, Humboldt, O'Brien, Osceola, Palo Alto, Pocahontas, Webster and Wright). The mission of Lifetime Dads is to provide education and support to fathers so that they can become lifetime dads. Any expecting father or current father/father-figure of a child ages 0-10 is eligible for Lifetime Dads services.Programming offered by the Lifetime Dads includes 24/7 Dads, Nurturing Fathers, Welcome to Dadhood-Doing the Dad thing, and a working partnership with Head Start and Head Start Dad’s T.I.M.E.
The 24/7 Dads program is a 12-week curriculum based program empowering males to become more involved, responsible, and committed in their role as a father-figure. The program focuses on improving a fathers’ self-awareness, caring for self, fathering skills, parenting skills, and relationship skills. The program covers the universal aspects of fatherhood so that men of all cultures, races, religions, and backgrounds can benefit. The curriculum is 24-hours in length and designed to provide empowerment and support and a father friendly environment.
The Nurturing Fathers program is offered in the Fort Dodge Correctional Center. The program works with incarcerated fathers in a group setting. The 12-week Nurturing Fathers curriculum helps a father understand his sense of self and feelings, as well as provides education on better parenting and relationship skills. The curriculum is 24 hours in length. Fathers learn skills to enhance their role as a father while incarcerated, and after release. Activities include fathers making videos of themselves reading books to their children.
Welcome to Dadhood-Doing the Dad thing is a prenatal program for expecting fathers providing information and instruction to enhance their child’s prenatal development. This program focuses on building the bond between Dad and child from prenatal through the first few months of life. Lifetime Dads offers this programming as part of the prenatal program at the Spencer Hospital.
Lifetime Dads provides educational programs to Head Start’s Dad’s T.I.M.E. program along with consultation services for Head Start staff. Lifetime Dads also offers support to Head Start fathers and staff in Webster, Wright, Humboldt, and Hamilton Counties. Lifetime Dads provided 81 contacts with Head Start fathers and 23 contacts with Head Start mothers during the past year.
The grant to fund the Lifetime Dads program was awarded to UDMO in September of 2006. Funding for this project was provided by the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The program was designed to be a service to fathers of children in UDMO’s early childhood programs, as well as a community resource for fathers and community partners. All Lifetime Dads programs are voluntary. Services are available to all eligible persons regardless of race, age, gender, disability or religion.
