Transit
Northeast Iowa Community Action - Transit
Transit The Northeast Iowa Community Action Corporation (NEICAC) - Transit Program is proud to provide transportation services to the general public in this extremely rural northeastern corner of Iowa. Northeast Iowa Community Action Transit is the designated Regional Public Transit System. With a fleet of 52 vehicles, 48 vehicles are ADA handicapped accessible. NEICAC - Transit provides the only form of public transportation available in five of the seven counties served by NEICAC. The only exception is in the town of Decorah, where a private for profit company, Hometown Taxi, operates. Of special note is that our transit system has received the "Rural Transit System of the Year" award from the Iowa Department of Transportation in 1997 and 1999. We were the State of Iowa's nomination in the year of 2000 for National Transit System of the Year. In 2009 we received Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Award of Achievement for the largest decrease in cost per ride and the second largest increase in ridership among the other regional transit systems in Iowa for 2008. Last year our transit system provided or contracted to provide 202,688 one-way rides. We look forward to serving your transportation needs in an efficient and professional way.
Introduction to Our Services
The Transit Program provides transportation service to the general public living within our service area, which includes Allamakee, Clayton, Fayette, Howard, and Winneshiek counties. As a general rule, Northeast Iowa Community Action - Transit is a curb-to-curb public transit service, which means the driver will pick up and drop off at curbside. Riders needing additional assistance may request door-to-door service, which means the driver will be available to assist the rider to and from the main entry door and the transit vehicle. Drivers ARE NOT allowed to assist individuals inside their homes, clinics, public facilities, businesses, etc. Anyone needing that type of assistance may bring one escort at no additional charge.
NEICAC - Transit’s fleet of vehicles regularly transport individuals to work, medical appointments, meal sites, school, church, for shopping purposes, or just to visit with friends and family. We offer several types of transportation - Regularly Scheduled In-town Service, Regularly Scheduled County Trips, Contracted Service, and Special Request (Cab) Service.
